A man leaning back on a sofa, smoking a cigar and watching the dancers on the stage.
However, this is not a theater, but a room in your home.
There is a huge circular screen on the wall and an audio device next to it.
This is nothing other than today's "television."
Albert Robida's 1883 illustration Telephonoscope is a bold prediction of the future of entertainment in the home. At a time when neither cinema nor recording equipment existed and it was still nearly 50 years before the appearance of television, Robida had already conceived a system that could "simultaneously deliver images and sound over a distance."
This work is an illustration for the satirical novel "The 20th Century" set in the future, and is known as one of the most prescient pieces in the series.
