The poster "Sarah Bernhardt", created by Alphonse Mucha in 1896, is a monumental work that beautifully combines a tribute to Sarah Bernhardt, an actress symbolic of the Belle Époque, with the pinnacle of Art Nouveau decorative art.
This work was produced to advertise a feature article scheduled to appear in the December 15th issue of the literary magazine La Plume of that year, but the article was actually published in the January 1st issue of 1897. The poster depicts Sarah in the role of Mélisande from A Princess from a Distant Land, a play she successfully performed in 1895. Her expression exudes the dignity and mysterious charm of a queen.
The crown of lilies adorning her hair is an actual ornament designed by Mucha and produced by the jeweler Lalique. The radiating star and plant motifs, the graceful curves of her hair, and the fantastical composition all make this a masterpiece that encapsulates the aesthetics of Art Nouveau.
