It was intriguing, but also exciting! -- A silent comic masterpiece that will have you laughing at the adventures of the black cat.
Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, who lived in Paris at the end of the 19th century, was a rare artist who captured the entire essence of cats: their grace, whimsy, and curiosity. This work, "Black Cat and a Cigar (Ça Brûle = Hot!)," is one of several silent cartoons included in the collection "Cats (Des Chats)," published in 1898.
A black cat is interested in a cigar he found on the roadside. He sniffs the smoke, approaches it slowly, and when he touches it with his front paw, he goes, "Ouch!" He becomes flustered, hops around, spins around, and finally walks away with a look of regret on his face.
Even though there are no lines, the continuous expression makes it seem as if you can hear the cat's "language" in each frame, clearly demonstrating Steinlen's high level of observation and descriptive ability. The swaying smoke, the jumping movements, and each and every gesture have a sense of rhythm that is still found in modern animation.
This photo is humorous and adorable, and somehow reminds us of our own failures, bringing cats and humans closer together.
