Théophile Steinlen, "Black Cat and Wooden Horse", 1898, Antique print from "Cats"
A black cat and a girl - a small story woven together by a momentary encounter.
Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen was a painter and printmaker active in Paris at the end of the 19th century, known for his posters for "Le Chat Noir," as well as his depictions of ordinary people and cats. This work, "The Black Cat and the Wooden Horse," is included in the collection "Des Chats," published in 1898, and is one of the "silent comics" that unfold without the use of words.
A little girl plays with a toy rocking horse. Suddenly, a black cat appears in front of her. The girl is wary of the cat, which approaches out of curiosity, but seems to want to play alone. In the story, the two get closer, then miss each other, and then part ways.
This work, which is composed entirely of line drawings, beautifully expresses the psychological fluctuations of the cat and the child. In particular, the black cat, with its slightly long fur and soft, is cautious yet curious, and Steinlen's unique observational eye shines through.
