Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen was a painter and printmaker active in Paris at the end of the 19th century, and is unrivaled in his depictions of cats. This work, "The Black Cat and the Frog," is included in the collection "Des Chats" published in 1898, and is presented in the form of a "silent comic" without dialogue.
The black cat, curious about the frog, tries to play with it, but receives an unexpected counterattack and falls into the pond... The humorous yet sophisticated composition of the scene highlights Steinlen's keen observational skills and descriptive ability.
Of particular note is the pose of the frog depicted in the last panel. This composition is reminiscent of Katsushika Hokusai's "Hokusai Manga" and clearly illustrates the influence of Japonism in Europe during the Art Nouveau period. This pose, which was also copied by artists such as Emile Gallé, quietly smiles as the crystallization of intercultural exchange.
