Théophile Steinlen, "Chanoir's Tour, Coming Soon", 1896 Lithograph Poster
🖤 The art of traveling with the black cat, a symbol of the Belle Epoque──
Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen's Prochainement Chat Noir (Coming Soon) is a poster created in 1896 to advertise a tour of the cabaret Le Chat Noir.
Chateau Noir was an iconic cabaret in Montmartre, Paris, founded by the poet Rodolphe Saly, and was a center of art and culture through shadow puppetry, poetry readings, and musical performances. The black cat, which could be said to be its signature character, is depicted by Steinlen as a mysterious and humorous being, leaving a strong impression on the viewer.
This work is counted among Steinlen's masterpieces, and the strong black silhouette and the graphic composition of the red and gold background catch the viewer's eye. The publisher Charles Vernoux's stamp can be seen in the lower right corner, and the print was made with high-quality lithograph, and it is still highly valued among many museums and collectors today.
