Théophile Steinlen, "Comiot's Bike", 1899 (from Les Maîtres de l'Affiche)

Sale price¥352,000

A revolutionary vehicle and an elegant woman - a motorcycle racing through the countryside and a chase with geese.

This work, "Comiot's Bike," is an advertising poster for the French bicycle and motorcycle manufacturer "Comiot," which was released in 1899. The artist is Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, who is also known for his cat motifs. This work is included in the 190th issue of the collector's edition of "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche," a collection of masterpieces of poster art.

A woman wearing a red blouse, black skirt and white hat is seen riding a motorbike down a farm road. A flock of startled geese fly away in front of her, bringing a certain humor and dynamism to the otherwise idyllic rural scene.

The model is said to be a projection of Steinlen's beloved daughter, Colette, as she grew up, and combines a fatherly gaze with the ideal image of a modern woman. This is a beautiful blend of urban sophistication and the leisurely countryside.
