Théophile Steinlen, "The Naughty Horse", 1898, antique print from "Cats"
The cat and its child keep failing at playing horse racing - this is an adorable depiction of the misunderstanding between the cat and its child.
The late 19th century Parisian painter Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen captured the expressions and behavior of cats with a keen eye, leaving behind many silent cartoons. This work, "The Naughty Horse (Le Méchant Dada)," is one of the silent cartoons included in the art book "Cats (Des Chats)" published in 1898.
The story begins with a little girl trying to play with a cat, pretending it was a horse. However, the cat won't stay still, and it runs away and gets angry. Just when she thinks she has finally caught it, it flips over in an instant, and the story ends with the girl standing there all alone.
Steinlen has beautifully depicted the whims of a cat and the innocence of a child, as well as the humor that arises from the misunderstanding between them, using only pictures without any dialogue. Expressions come through in the delicate monochrome line drawings, and each frame is full of movement and emotion.
This is a humorous work that resonates across generations, depicting both cats and children as beings that never do what you want them to do.
