Théophile Steinlen, "Cats Meowing", 1898, Antique print from "Cats"
The rhythm of life contained in their cries - Steinlen's notation of cats' emotions.
Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen's masterpiece "Cats (Des Chats)", published in 1898, contains many paintings that go beyond mere sketches and capture the breathing of living creatures. This work "Miaulements (Cats' Meows)" is one of them.
Depicted across the pages are cats meowing in a variety of situations: a mother cat calling her kittens, a kitten begging for food, a wary cat, a fighting cat, a cat wanting affection. Each cat's behavior is subtly different, beautifully visualizing the gradation of emotions that lie behind the single word "meow."
In this work, Steinlen's high level of line drawing technique is particularly prominent, and the movement of muscles, the texture of fur, and even the changes in facial expressions are all packed into one piece. The poses of the cats, arranged like musical scores, give the viewer a sense of rhythm and story.
It is rare to find a work that encompasses such a wide variety of subjects among art with cats as its subject. This piece will be appreciated not only by cat lovers, but also as a first-class reference for late 19th century animal paintings.
