Théophile Steinlen, "Lazy Cats", 1898, antique print from "Cats"
Sleeping, stretching, curled up, simply being there - a masterpiece that captures the essence of a cat's existence.
Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen is known as a painter who depicted the cats living in the city of Paris at the end of the 19th century, sometimes poetically and sometimes realistically. This work, "Lazy Cats," from the 1898 publication "Des Chats," is a collection of sketches of cats relaxing in various poses.
The paintings, which fill the entire screen, depict cats crouching, lying on their backs, stretching their backs, grooming themselves, etc. The scenes of black cats, white cats, and long-haired cats spending their quiet time in different poses are like a snapshot of everyday life.
The composition is similar to that of the "Ukiyo-gafu Sanhen" (Three volumes of Ukiyo-e) by Utagawa Hiroshige, an ukiyo-e artist from the late Edo period, and one can sense the sensibility of Japanese art, which skillfully utilizes movement and space while juxtaposing motifs. With the trend of Japonism in the background in late 19th century Europe, Steinlen can also be said to have assimilated that aesthetic sense with his own eyes.
This study painting is filled with tranquility, loveliness, and light rhythm, making it a perfect piece to add to your collection.
