Théophile Steinlen, "Who is the biggest loser?", 1898, Antique print from "Cats"

Sale price¥55,000

A dog, a cat, and a boy - how will this little love triangle surrounding Tartine end?

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, who was active in Paris at the end of the 19th century, depicted humorous events in everyday life through the figures of animals such as cats and dogs. This work, "Who is the biggest loser (Le plus vexé des trois)," is a silent cartoon included in "Des Chats" published in 1898.

The story begins with a boy holding a delicious-looking tartine (a light snack of bread spread with cheese and butter). Seeing it, a dog and a cat rush over. The boy struggles to calm the situation, even as he is bossed around by the two animals. But who ends up losing the most? Don't miss the cat's proud expression.

As the title "Le plus vexé des trois (Who of the three was the most upset?)" suggests, this piece is an allegory filled with "humorous questions." In a small fight over food, it depicts greed, dissatisfaction, and even a touch of melancholy.

This masterpiece combines Steinlen's unique observational sharpness and sarcasm, making you laugh quietly and making you think a little.
