Théophile Steinlen, "Pasteurized Milk from Vingenne", 1897 (from Les Maîtres de l'Affiche)
A girl in a beautiful dress and three cats - Steinlen's most gentle depiction of milk time.
From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, French painter Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen depicted the lives of ordinary people and the cuteness of cats in numerous posters and illustrations. This work, Sterilized Milk of Vingeanne, is an advertising poster created in 1896 for "Lait pur Stérilisé de la Vingeanne (Sterilized Milk of Vingeanne)."
The girl is sitting on a large chair, holding a bowl in both hands and drinking milk. At her feet, three cats look up with expectant expectation. The girl is modeled after Steinlen's beloved daughter Colette, and the cats are said to be based on his real pets.
The soft, bright colors, warm composition, and natural behavior of the cats express a happy, domestic moment. Though it is a poster, it is a piece that exudes the gentleness of family memories.
This work was published as No. 95 in the collector's edition "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche" (1897), which brings together outstanding poster art.
