Dreams and Prayer in Montmartre: Willett's Writings that Colored the Performing Arts
Adolphe Willette (1857–1926) created this work, L'Enfant Prodigue, as a theater poster for a pantomime by poet Michel Carré and composer André Wormser.
The work depicts the figure of a young man offering a prayer of atonement, and other characters who emerge as if in a flashback - a drama that transcends father and son, prayer and visions, and the stage and the audience.
Adolphe Willet was a caricaturist and poster artist active in Montmartre at the end of the 19th century, and is known as a regular at the cafes "Chat Noir" and "Mirliton," where artists of the time gathered. Jules Chéret also created a poster for the same pantomime, "The Prodigal Son," and by comparing the composition and expression of the two posters, we can get a sense of the diversity of theater advertising in the Belle Époque period.
This work was published in 1896 as the 14th print in the masterpiece print series "Masters of the Poster" (Les Maîtres de l'Affiche), which selected and printed reduced versions of popular posters, and features an embossed blind stamp in the lower right corner.
